I think it’s funny when people say you have to be super bendy to do yoga. It’s kind of the other way around. Doing yoga makes you more bendy and flexible.
I love yoga. And I need to practice more often. But, to be honest, I’m not very flexible.
It takes me an hour of stretching before I can bend forward and touch my toes. I don’t have the arm strength (yet!) to do inversions and I can’t twist my body into pretzel shapes.
But, I still go to yoga class and love the relaxing stretches.
Yoga isn’t about how deep you can get into a pose on your first try or looking like a gymnast. Yoga is about making time for yourself, relaxing and finding your own level of personal improvement after each class or session.
I learned early on not to compare myself to the people around me in yoga class. After all, one lady I admire is old enough to be my mother, twice my weight and looks like Gumby on the mat. She’s amazing! Just because I can’t do what she does, doesn’t mean I’m not benefiting from the class.
I often use yoga blocks and pose modifications to get into comfortable positions. Why? Because I’m just not that flexible — yet!
Until next time,
Choose healthy!
