Paying Your ‘You Bill’ Helps to Manage Your Energy

I like to pay my ‘you bill’ by exploring new places, like this park in Denison, Iowa.

Bills. They ping our inboxes without skipping a cycle. We reciprocate with payments and move forward with yet another month of electricity, groceries, vehicles, homes, credit cards and whatever else we enjoy paying for the use of in our lives.

Too bad we don’t get a paper invoice that itemizes our personal usage.

That overly busy weekend, day you worked late or when you were fighting off that sinus infection sure took a toll. If we got notified once a day, week or month with how much mental and physical energy we’ve used, maybe we’d be more inclined to pre-pay our you bills. We’d fill ourselves up for the days ahead, much like pre-paying that rent or mortgage for the next month.

Replenishing Your Personal Energy

I’ve been thinking a lot about this you bill idea and decided it’s much easier to make small daily deposits into ourselves than to wait for a massive bill ( i.e. flare up, sick day, burnout) at the end of the month, when we’re fully depleted.

Fill yourself up by doing things that bring you joy, relaxation and energy. Here are a few ideas:

  • Go for a walk in nature
  • Read or write something
  • Engage in a hobby you enjoy
  • Chat with a trusted friend
  • Make a homemade meal
  • Take an unapologetic nap
  • Schedule a PTO day
  • Relax in a bath

Think about what you do on long weekends, vacations or holiday breaks and try to weave some of those pastimes into each day, even if it’s just for a moment.

Speaking of Naps…Embrace Them!

I recently worked on an article for Sleep Number’s marketing about the health benefits of naps. I was a cheerleader for daytime snoozes before, but now I’m a true believer in their magic to re-energize the creative mind.

So, I nap almost daily.

I’m also making the effort to go for daily walks and pencil in full days off on my work calendar more often. That’s especially hard when the creative mind likes to fire up any old day of the week and spill out onto my keyboard!

By paying my you bill a little bit each day, I haven’t been getting hit with flares of my autoimmune conditions nearly as often. My health seems a bit more even — with fewer highs and lows.

How do you pay yourself? Fill yourself up? Keep the “cup full”? Practice self-care? Whatever you want to call it, it’s needed more than ever as we navigate a global pandemic that’s lasted over a year and oh so many shifts in how we live our daily lives.

Until next time,
Choose healthy!
