A few of my marketing colleagues spend time penning creative essays. I was reading some of their prose and poems recently and started to reminisce fondly at my time spent with my high school and college literary magazines.
The Morning Star at North Scott High School and Earthwords at the University of Iowa both inspired me to write poetry, something I haven’t done enough of since focusing on the worlds of journalism and marketing.
Today I decided to explore some thoughts by playing with words. Oh, and I love onions.
Onion
Sometimes sweet,
Often bold.
Occasionally spicy,
I’m an onion, you know?
Wrapped in layers,
You do not see,
Release the past,
Less scallion-y.
Tears fill each cut,
Remove skin, roots, leaves,
Preparing a savory recipe,
That no longer serves me.

Me? I love Emily Dickinson and Edgar Allan Poe.
Until next time,
Choose healthy!
